The Syntasso team has a long history of open source and community engagement as well as being leaders within the platform engineering space. Through this work over time it’s become clear that people are struggling to identify and deliver on the key differentiators that drive success in platform engineering. In trying to clarify this messaging and journey, the team has developed a platform maturity model outlining principles and behaviours that can lead to more effective outcomes.
We have been blown away by the interest in this model and have been grateful to receive input and collaboration from world-class industry leaders, engineers, innovators and authors. We are also keenly aware that maturity models have a history of being misused and want to be sure that these concepts are used for their intended purpose, to aid and support the engineers who are building internal platforms. For that reason, we are excited to announce that the platform maturity model draft has been donated to the Cloud Native Computing Foundation (CNCF) Technical Advisory Group (TAG) for App Delivery for further iteration and release.
The TAG App Delivery has proven to be an effective community that has managed cross-vendor and industry alignment on emergent topics such as GitOps and Operators. Recently this group released a white paper on platform engineering which has already become a frequently quoted resource when defining platform engineering at a high level. We are confident that this group is the right place to steward this maturity model.
If this topic resonates with you, we would encourage you to contribute to this platform maturity model. We at Syntasso are particularly impressed by the previous efforts by this TAG to be inclusive, including over 20 contributors from different organisations and backgrounds for each of their released resources. Please register interest in the GitHub issue, join the Working Group (WG) Platforms Slack channel (# wg-platforms) which is part of the CNCF Slack server, or consider joining the regular calls to engage with the team working on this.
